Apparently keen to squeeze in as many 2013 achievements as possible, scientists have just invented computers that act like brains. Scary, but amazing too, considering we pretty much only just invented computers.

By looking at the way human brains work, scientists have designed computer chips that have the ability to learn from their own mistakes, which is a huge turning point in our development of artificial intelligence. If only our own brains were that clever, we might stop eating bad food and watching X Factor.

The smart new chip, which will be released in 2014, mimics our brains’ synapses to not only bypass its own errors, but take in new information and adapt in ways to avoid future errors.

Eventually, the new designs will help make it possible for computers to actually see, hear, manipulate and control, without having to rely on humans programming them. Maybe not so great for the economy, but great for evolution, right?

One of these soon-to-be-jobless astrophysicists, Larry Smarr, from the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology sums it up: “We’re moving from engineering computing systems to something that has many of the characteristics of biological computing.”

How we now use this incredible new technology is the really crucial thing. Today we need to be implementing the tech that can help us adapt to and help mitigate a warming world impacted by climate change and create new systems that will help us keep growing sustainably. Only time will tell if computers that act like brains can help us get there, but it’s clear humans are getting smarter by the day – and more aware of the importance of protecting future generations. Let’s put our brains together, humans and computers copying humans alike, and think big. Tomorrow’s depending on us.
